BOSTON — After tonight’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks 41-year-old hockey legend and now-Bruins winger Jaromir Jagr will have played his 200th career playoff game, and he will become only the 19th player to ever do so.

With 199 career playoff games under his belt, the future hall of famer is no stranger to tonight’s Game 4 in the Stanley Cup Final. In his tenured career, Jagr has played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, and now Boston, and with the exception of only Dallas (who he played the first half of this season with) all of those teams reached the postseason when Jagr was a member of them, and he also captured two Stanley Cup championships as a member of the Pens.

“Everybody in that dressing room knows what he’s done in his career…[and] sees what he does now. Talk about a guy that goes the extra mile to stay in great shape. When everybody else has gone home, he’s still at the rink doing extra, because he knows what he needs to do to keep up with the game,” said Bruins head coach Claude Julien.

“He’s a great example for younger players to look at.”

Chris Chelios leads the list of all-time career playoff games with 266 (Montreal, Chicago and Detroit). Jagr may have been a little closer to the top spot had he not played three seasons of his career with the KHL from 2008-2011.

“I’m sure that number would have been higher [had he been in the NHL] and it’s [still] an impressive number,” Bruins assistant captain Chris Kelly said of Jagr on Wednesday.

Jagr is currently tied with Bruins legend Phil Exposito with 118 career game-winning-goals, which leads the NHL, a record black and gold fans are quietly hoping he can surpass at some point during this series.

BOSTON — Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz and catcher David Ross are back on the disabled list.

Buchholz has been suffering from a strained trapezius muscle in his neck and was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday evening, following a bullpen session before game No. 2 of a day/night doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Buchholz’s session was to determine whether he had made progress since skipping his previous start, but he was not cleared to start this weekend, and was placed on the DL, retroactive to June 9.

Catcher David Ross was also placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list on Tuesday evening, his second stint there this season. Ross was struck by a foul ball in the third inning of the game against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night. Despite finishing the game, Ross hasn’t played since. During his previous placement on the list, Ross missed 11 games before be activated May 24.

With both pitcher and catcher added to the DL, reliever Alex Wilson and catcher Ryan Lavarnway were both recalled from Pawtucket Tuesday evening, and arrived in Boston following their game in Columbus.

With Buchholz’s next start slated to be skipped, the Red Sox will need to recall another starter for Saturday’s game against Detroit, but as of late, no rotation moves have been announced. Ryan Dempster is slotted to pitch in his usual position in the rotation on Wednesday night against the Rays and John Lackey will likely pitch the opener against Detroit Thursday night.

NORTH ATTLEBORO — According to WBZ’s Karen Anderson, the gun recovered by Massachusetts State Police near the area where 27-year-old Dorchester man was found near the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, is not believed to be the murder weapon because it is the wrong caliber.

Hernandez is not being ruled out as a suspect in the investigation into the apparent slaying, according to the report.

Odin Lloyd (Source: WBZ)

The CBS Boston affiliate’s revelations, citing an anonymous law enforcement source, come after an initial report by Greg Bedard and Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated on Tuesday that stated Hernandez was not considered a suspect in the death of the man, who has been identified by his uncle as Odin Lloyd.

ABC News has also learned that police planned to execute a search warrant on a vehicle rented in Hernandez’s name.

The Sun Chronicle in Attleboro, first reported that the police located a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban registered to Enterprise Rent-a-Car that is believed to be related to the crime. SI.com reported that Hernandez’ name is allegedly tied with paperwork relating to the rental car, calling the vehicle a “key piece of evidence.”

WBZ also confirmed earlier reports from ABC News that the deceased an “associate” of Hernandez, adding that the 23-year-old football star was “uncooperative.” According to Lloyd’s family, he dated the sister of Aaron Hernandez’s girlfriend.

Lloyd did not have a phone number or address listed in the White Pages. An Edwin Lloyd is listed with a North Attleboro address approximately one mile from where the deceased was discovered. New England Sports Journal has not confirmed any relationship between the two men, however, in an interview with the Boston Globe, the uncle identified himself as Ed.

Hernandez’s home is also approximately 1 1/2 miles from where the body was found by a jogger.

Lloyd was a linebacker for the semi-pro Boston Bandits and Bandits coach Olivier Bustin said he last saw Lloyd at practice on Saturday.

Hernandez was questioned by police on Tuesday, and his home was later searched by law enforcement that evening as part of the homicide investigation. Police were again at the home on Wednesday.

Bedard, who was reporting happenings at Hernandez’s North Attleboro residence via Twitter on Tuesday, also stated that two males were escorted to cruisers and left. They were not handcuffed. Bedard had reported earlier that police checked the IDs and searched the vehicle of the two men as they attempted to leave. Neither of the individuals (seen here and here) appeared to be Hernandez, who Bedard said could be seen in a window of the house.

Masslive.com’s Nick Underhill also reported large amounts of police activity at the scene via Twitter, including officers taking photos of the house and inspecting a car in the driveway. He said on Wednesday that officers could be seen searching the woods near his home.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office declined to make a comment to SI.com and told the Sun Chronicle only that the investigation was ongoing.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Patriots don’t believe Hernandez was involved in a crime, but there are “lots of questions.”

This isn’t the first report of legal issues involving Hernandez.

According to a TMZ report today, Hernandez was recently sued by a man who was allegedly shot in the face by Hernandez during an altercation at Tootsie’s Cabaret in Miami on Feb. 13. The plaintiff, Alexander S. Bradley, alleged that Hernandez discharged a gun in his face causing him to lose an eye, in addition to other injuries to his hand and face. This report is presumably tied to an April TerezOwens.com report. In that story, the web site stated that it had received an anonymous tip regarding Hernandez’s involvement in “some sort of shooting dispute.” A letter allegedly addressed to Hernandez from New York law firm Jaroslawicz & Jaros stated only that he had not responded to earlier correspondence sent on March 12 and threatened legal action if an unspecified issue was not resolved.

In 2010, it was also reported by the Boston Globe that Hernandez had repeatedly failed drug tests, citing anonymous NFL sources. Hernandez later told the Globe he only failed one test.

Hernandez signed a five-year, $40 million contract extension with the Patriots in August 2012, which locked him up until 2018. He played in 10 games in 2012, recording 51 catches for 483 yards and five touchdowns. He is currently recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but is expected to be healthy in time for minicamp.

What was originally just suggested specified as Remy’s seasonal allergies kicking up, has now been clarified as a touch of pneumonia via his personal Twitter account, which was updated on June 5. Remy has been absent from the NESN booth since May 28.

Thx for your thoughts-I’ve caught a little pneumonia and it has to run it’s course-it’s NOT due to anything else-hope to be back soon-Jerry

— Jerry Remy (RemDawg) (@Jerry_Remy) June 5, 2013

The 60-year-old noted that his illness was not due to a relapse of lung cancer, which he initially was diagnosed with and treated for in 2008, missing most of the 2009 season post-treatment. He also revealed this past April that he was treated for a relapse during spring training.

Several reporters and broadcasters have stepped up to fill in during Remy’s recovery including Dennis Eckersley and Rob Bradford, while Peter Gammons and Jim Rice are expected to fill in for the rest of his absence.

It was almost flawless.

The Boston Bruins put on their most complete performance not only of the Stanley Cup Final, but of their entire postseason run in 2013. They dictated the pace of the game, controlled the puck and imposed their will on the Chicago Blackhawks physically all game long. Behind the bench, Claude Julien has been like a maestro conducting a symphony and talk of the end of his tenure in Boston are nothing more than a chuckle-inducing memory. Stealing a game in Chicago, then taking a series lead at home has put the Bruins in an extremely favorable position and places the pressure squarely on the Blackhawks to not return home with a 3-1 deficit.

Here are a few thoughts on last night’s game.

Showing grit
While most will point to the fact that the Bruins had a distinct advantage in hits in the game, that statistic usually says very little about the actual effectiveness of a team’s physicality. Only the eye test can really tell you if one team is taking it to the other. Watching even five minutes of Game 3 would have made that clear. The Bruins routinely pushed the Blackhawks off the puck, went into corners to either maintain the zone or get the puck back when in their zone and generally out-muscled Chicago. This was no more evident than when captain Zdeno Chara took it to Brian Bickle and Brad Marchand proceeded to tangle with Andrew Shaw. Make no mistake. That wasn’t an accident. The score was in their favor late in the game and the Bruins decided to take the Blackhawks’ spirit with them.

Bergeron derserved the Hart
There is no one who is more critical to his team’s success than Patrice Bergeron and he’s on the sport’s biggest stage shaming the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association for essentially disregarding him. Like most MVP awards, the flashy offensive star gets the glory, but in terms of being valuable to a team and a system, Bergeron is hands down the most irreplaceable and Game 3 was the perfect showcase of that. As he’s done all postseason, Bergeron also showed voters what a Selke Award winner should really look like as well. Bergeron blocked shots, got in passing lanes, won 24 out of 28 faceoffs – 86 percent – and generally frustrated the heck out of Jonathan Toews, on top of scoring a crucial insurance goal in the second period. As Bergeron goes, so do the Bruins and right now he’s soaring.

No. 3 in the line rushes, No. 1 in our hearts
Claude Julien’s adjustments to the third line have been outstanding. While Daniel Paille has been getting a lot of the credit, as he should, Chris Kelly looks like a man reborn while now centering a line with Paille and Tyler Seguin. He’s got jump in is step and is another one of those guys doing the little things to get wins. He’s been phenomenal on the penalty kill and at the faceoff dot, converting 73 percent of his chances last night, and in winning puck battles. Seguin, too, appears just inches away from a breakout performance. The Bruins’ first goal of the game was the culmination of the chemistry these three have developed and their willingness to do the dirty work.

After Corey Crawford stopped Seguin’s initial shot on a feed from Paille, Kelly went into the corner, prevented Nick Leddy getting the puck cleanly and then Paille took it off Dave Bolland’s stick and fired it past Crawford to the glove side (I think I remember reading something about that). Nothing pretty, but all good.

The old man’s got something left in the tank
At 41 years old, Jaromir Jagr actually has people contemplating the possibility that he might not just be a rental. He hasn’t had a goal in the playoffs, but his fingerprints are all over the Bruins’ success. He doesn’t have the wheels, but he still has the hands and the vision to be an effective player and that was extremely evident on Boston’s second goal when he found Bergeron with a perfect feed on the power play.

This old dog doesn’t need to learn new tricks. The old ones are suiting him just fine.

Special teams have been, well … special
Even the loudest complainer about how poor the Bruins’ power play has looked at times this season has to admit that it could have been worse. They could have played like the Blackhawks in this series. Boston penalty kill was outstanding throughout Game 3, allowing just one shot in five short-handed situations. At one point Bruins had more scoring opportunities on the penalty kill than Chicago did on the power play, with repeated shorthanded bids that just didn’t work out. When they had the man advantage, the Bruins turned their game plan upside down and focused on keeping the puck below the circles, as opposed to swinging it out to the point as tends to be their predictable Modus Operandi. It resulted in one goal and almost two others.

The Bruins only needed three periods of hockey to shut out the Blackhawks, 2-0, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night. With an impressive performance, Boston now leads the series, 2-1, and is just two wins away from winning it all.

After a scoreless first period, the Bruins got all the goals they would need in the second. Daniel Paille, who scored the overtime game-winner in Game 2, beat Corey Crawford to make it 1-0. They doubled their lead on the power play when Jaromir Jagr made a sick pass to Patrice Bergeron, who fired it home just after Chicago had gotten one of its players out of the penalty box. The Bruins dominated in the faceoff department, with a glaring 40-16 advantage.

Tuukka Rask was, well, Tuukka. He faced 28 shots. None of them found the back of the net. The Bruins’ defense was solid all night. Scoring chances for the Blackhawks were few and far between.

There was drama even before the opening faceoff. Chicago’s Marian Hossa was scratched due to an undisclosed injury. For Boston, Zdeno Chara and Milan Lucic collided during pregame warm-ups. Both played the entire game.

Game 4 is Wednesday night at TD Garden.

Two games are in the books and not much has changed. We’re still seeing two teams that play similar styles and are doing so on a very high level. In either game, chances were to he had on both sides and the outcomes could have very easily been flipped.

Here are some quick thoughts and observations from Game 2.

First period mi-RASK-ale
The Blackhawks took it to the Bruins in the first period, taking 25 more shot attempts than the Bruins in the first period. Nineteen of those shots made it through to goal, compared to the Bruins’ three, and just one made it past Rask as part of a convoluted scramble in front of the net that saw, among other things, the goaltender get knocked to the ice by his own teammate. Rask’s exceptional play in the first was instrumental in keeping his team in the game and perhaps took some of the wind out of Chicago’s sails as they never seemed to be able to ramp up the energy the way they did in the first.

Go glove side
The Bruins have scored five goals in this series against Corey Crawford and four of those have been to the Chicago goaltender’s glove side. All three of their Game 1 goals were to his left, as was Daniel Paille’s game-winner in Game 2, a wrister that probably should have been stopped.

Jaromir Jagr’s shot off the post in overtime also beat Crawford glove side.

While Crawford has shown a good glove at times in this series, including the three overtimes in Game 1 and the start of Game 2, it’s clearly a weak area in his game and the Bruins have been making a point of testing him there. That’s a practice they should continue.

Third line (finally) produces
The third line has been an area of concern for the Bruins throughout the season and really has been the weakest link among the four lines. Claude Julien mixed things up putting Paille, Chris Kelly and Tyler Seguin together and it paid dividends as that group netted both of the Bruins’ goals in the contest. Paille figured into both Bruins goals. He earned an assist on Kelly’s game-tying goal in which Kelly got into the dirty areas and flicked a rebound past Crawford, and of course, fired the game-winner.

Fast-forward a few hours, and into yet another overtime, and the Stanley Cup Final is tied at a game apiece.

In Game 2 Saturday night, the Bruins beat the Blackhawks, 2-1, courtesy of Daniel Paille’s labeled shot that found the upper-right corner of the net behind Corey Crawford at the 13:48 mark.

While Paille gets credit for the game-winner, the outstanding performance by Tuukka Rask cannot be overlooked. He was sensational again in this one, especially in the first period when Chicago peppered him with 19 shots. But only Patrick Sharp’s shot from near the right boards got past him. The score was only 1-0 after 20 minutes. Rask kept his team in the game, making 33 saves in all. The Bruins had weathered the storm, and slowly got their groove back during the remainder of the contest, outshooting the ‘Hawks 24-15 the rest of the way.

Chris Kelly scored the other Boston goal in the second period, which tied the score. The game remained tied until Paille’s game-winner in OT that allowed Bruins fans to go to bed smiling, unlike early Thursday morning.

The series shifts to Boston for Game 3 on Monday night.

(Note: This is the second of a three-part weekly summer sneak peak into the 2013 season for New England NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision teams.)

STORRS, Conn. — At times it didn’t seem like things could get any uglier for the UConn football team in 2012.

Just two years removed from a Fiesta Bowl appearance (granted, with an 8-5 record to win the weakest BCS conference in the land), the Huskies finished their second losing season at 5-7 thanks in large part to some awful losses to loathsome teams such as South Florida and Temple.

At the heart of the problem for the Huskies was an offense that was worse than stagnant. Stagnant would suggest UConn simply didn’t go anywhere. Instead, the Huskies effectively moved backwards on a consistent basis due to a propensity for turnovers. UConn quarterbacks threw a combined 18 picks to lead the conference and as a unit, the offense was second to last in turnovers with 26 in 12 games.

UConn’s offensive line also contributed to the offensive woes with incredibly inconsistent play, resulting in a 2.52 yards per rush by Huskies ball carriers. Lyle McCombs, who served as the team’s primary ball carrier in 2012, had a better, but still pedestrian, 3.54 yards per carry on his way to 860 yards and six touchdowns. For McCombs, that kind of year could only be considered a disappointment after 1151 yards and 7 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman.

The Huskies’ blockers also allowed 33 sacks in 12 contests, a rate that ranked 105th in the nation.

Those struggles were among the reasons UConn scored more than 30 points just once all season — a 37-0 blowout of UMass in the season opener.

If that’s not ugly enough, the Huskies recently unveiled their new-look football helmets, pictured at right.

In an attempt to cure what ails them, the Huskies brought in T.J. Weist, formerly the wide receivers coach at Cincinnati, as the new offensive coordinator. Why not? The Bearcats receivers scorched the UConn defense, by far its strength last season, by a tune of a season-high tying 20 receptions that went for 284 yards and three touchdowns.

Weist certainly has his work cut out for him and it starts on the offensive line. Quarterback also remains a huge question for the Huskies, but the offense’s ability to run the football is what will really determine whether the offense will be successful or not. The line may be the most experienced group with almost the entire starting unit returning from last year. However, gaining experience and learning from it are two very different things and it remains to be seen whether the adjustments can be made. McCombs, a small back at 5-foot-8, 180 pounds, has the ability to slip through small creases, but having clear running lanes shouldn’t be considered a luxury for a running back. The Huskies also need McCombs to stay healthy because they have no real answers behind him at tailback on the depth chart.

At quarterback, Chandler Whitmer and Natick’s Scott McCummings are essentially polar opposites. Both appeared in all 12 of UConn’s games last year, but that’s about where the comparison ends. Whitmer, last year’s starter, is the more prototypical quarterback and attempted 93 percent of the Huskies’ passes. Sixteen of those passes ended up in the hands of opponents, giving him a share of the conference cellar in that category. It was not always his fault, as he spent a large part of the season getting punished by opposing defenses, but he has to make better decisions under pressure. McCummings attempted just two passes the entire season, acting as the team’s Wildcat quarterback. He rushed 39 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns. McCummings has been working on becoming a better all-around quarterback, but how much progress he’s made will have to be monitored.

The receiving corps won’t help make either quarterback look better. Geremy Davis and Shakim Phillips, the team’s top two receivers last season, are back, but the duo each only found the end zone once in 2012. Other than those two, the Huskies don’t have a receiver who caught a pass last season. Tebucky Jones (yep, the son of THAT Tebucky Jones) was the only non-graduating wide out other than Davis and Phillips that fit that bill, catching two passes, but left the program because he was unhappy with his playing time. Tight end Ryan Griffin, the team’s most viable option with six touchdowns, is gone after getting drafted in the sixth round by the Houston Texans, leaving that position completely up in the air.

Defensively, the Huskies lost some key contributors, including four of the team’s five All-Conference players from last year — defensive end Trevardo Williams, linebacker Sio Moore and cornerbacks Dwayne Gratz and Blidi Wreh-Wilson — but still appear to be a very good unit.

At linebacker, in addition to Moore, Jory Johnson is gone, taking away a combined 167 tackles, including 15.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and 11 pass breakups by Moore. However, Worcester’s Yawin Smallwood returns and is probably the best all-around player on that side of the ball, coming off a season in which he recorded 120 tackles, including 15.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks. Graham Stewart, who sat out last season after transferring from Florida, also figures to make an impact on the outside in Moore’s absence.

On the defensive line, UConn lost one of the conference’s best pass rushers in Williams, as well as defensive tackle Ryan Wirth, but the Huskies are deep in the trenches. Shemar Stephen and Jesse Joseph, who is returning after missing a significant portion of 2012 with a knee injury, will occupy the inside while B.J McBryde, Angelo Pruitt, Tim Willman and Elijah Norris battle for playing time on the outside. Pruitt can swing between the two positions.

Byron Jones is making the move to cornerback after recording 87 tackles from his safety spot in 2012. The move was made to cushion the blow of the loss of Gratz and Blidi Wreh-Wilson and has reportedly done well in making the transition thus far, but Taylor Mack will have to solidify the spot opposite Jones. Also, it leaves competition open for his vacant safety spot next to Ty-Meer Brown, who will provide steady tackling and a veteran presence.

2013 schedule/prediction
Date Oppenent (W/L)
Aug. 29 Towson (W)
Sept. 14 Maryland (L)
Sept. 21 Michigan (L)
Sept. 28 at Buffalo (W)
Oct. 12 South Florida (W)
Oct. 19 at Cincinnati (L)
Oct. 26 at UCF (L)
Nov. 8 Louisville (L)
Nov. 16 at SMU (L)
Nov. 23 at Temple (W)
Nov. 30 Rutgers (W)
Dec. 7 Memphis (W)

UConn’s website states boldly that this year boasts the “Best Home Schedule. Ever.” Whether or not that schedule will translate into any memorable games remains to be seen. UConn is certainly tough to pin down this season, largely because of the uncertainty surrounding the offense’s competence, as well as the questionable strength of the AAC.

Towson and a road contest against Buffalo are a pair of should-be non-conference wins that sandwich what figures to be a sure loss against a Michigan team that could very well be in the top-25 and a tougher-than-you’d-expect game against Maryland team that some believe is ready to make the jump under former UConn head coach Randy Edsall.

South Florida precedes what could be the toughest stretch of the year for the Huskies. A strong Cincinnati squad and back-to-back Big East champion Louisville, along with two teams that could be dangerous if the pieces fall correctly in UCF and SMU could leave UConn in a tough position in their attempt to make it back to a bowl game.

However, winnable games against Temple, Rutgers and Memphis to finish the slate will help.

The conference as a whole is a total wildcard, making it hard to adequately project how things will shake out. Considering the team’s internal challenges, a 6-6 mark sounds about right, but there is the potential for as few as two or three wins and as many as eight or nine.

CHESTNUT HILL — At the main entrance of the football stadium of Natick High School quarterback Troy Flutie’s choice of college, there’s a shrine to his uncle Doug — a bronze statue commemorating the school’s one and only Heisman Trophy winner’s “Miracle in Miami” Hail Mary toss, a moment that has become part of college football lore.

Nothing like a little pressure.

According to Rivals.com, Troy, a junior, committed to the Eagles yesterday. ESPNBoston.com confirmed the commitment through his father, Darren, who was a fine athlete in his own right — he played four seasons at BC, one with Doug, and is a member of the CFL Hall of Famer.

While carrying a surname that is recognizable to even non-sports fans in Massachusetts, he made a name for himself at Natick in 2012, leading the Redhawks to the Eastern Massachusetts Division 2A Super Bowl title as maybe the most dynamic dual-threat quarterback in the state. He threw for 3,153 yards, 35 touchdowns and eight interceptions, completing 68 percent of his passes, while amassing for 1,075 yards and 14 more scores.

He also impressed coaches during a one-day camp in Chestnut Hill, according to multiple sources. Among his accomplishments was a 4.57 40-yard dash.

According to his father, first-year BC head coach Steve Addazio stressed that Troy was offered a scholarship based on his own merits and not on his familial name.

“It is BC, and now we have generations going here, but I can tell you it’s a whole different feel,” Darren said. “Coach Addazio is a whole different element. He made it very clear to Troy, ‘I’m so glad your father, your uncle and your cousin came here; [but] I wouldn’t offer a scholarship to a kid unless I thought he could help us at BC, what I saw Sunday and what I saw on your film, you’re a football player and you’re gonna help us win games’.

“I thought it was neat that he clarified that. The legacy is cool, but Troy is Troy, and he’s gotta earn it on his own. I’m just so proud of him.”

According the MetroWest Daily News and ESPN, the offer from Boston College was his first Division 1 offer, however ESPN noted that there was some level of interest from a number of FBS and FCS schools. He can’t officially sign a National Letter of Intent until February, 2014.

While bigger than his uncle, who was 5-foot-10, Troy is still significantly undersized for a quarterback at an even six feet and 178 pounds and isn’t expected to play under center for the Eagles. ESPN reports he will be classified under the athlete position and may play wide receiver.

Troy represents the 15th commitment for the BC recruiting class of 2014. Two days ago Virginia safety Kamrin Moore, another player who will fall under the athlete category, also committed.

Troy is not the only Flutie of his generation to play for the Eagles. While Doug’s only son has autism, his nephew Billy, Troy’s cousin, suited up for four seasons with Boston College — 2007 to 2010 — after redshirting his freshman year, appearing at different times as a receiver, punter and placekick holder.
