Napoli have confirmed that they have appointed Carlo Ancelotti as the new manager of the club. Last week, Ancelotti met the president of the club, Aurelio De Laurentiis in Rome, to discuss their plans to join the team. He will be replacing Mauricio Sarri, who his position this week. He has reportedly been offered a job at Zenit St. Petersburg, a Russian club. Club officials visited him last week and offered to take the position left vacant by Roberto Mancini, who left the club to become Italian national team’s manager earlier this month.
A tweetstorm followed Ancelotti’s appointment at the club. He first released a statement on Napoli’s official twitter account, saying, “I’m really happy and honored to be the coach of a team of such a unique city with incredible fans.” Rivals Juventus seemed equally keen on his appointment. The club’s boss Massimiliano Allegri was one of the first to congratulate him on the position. He wrote, “Welcome back to Italy Mister Ancelotti! Serie A regains one of the excellences of our football.”
The new Italian manager last worked with German club Bayern Munich. After his much controversial ouster in September 2017, he hasn’t been a part of any team’s management. The last time he worked in Italian football was back in 2009, when he was working with AC Milan in 2009. He left the job to become manager of English team Chelsea.
Napoli have signed a three-year contract with the manager. He was turned down several offers to take this job with the Serie A runners-up, including one to manage the Italian national team. De Laurentiis took to Twitter to appreciate Sarri’s contributions at the Stadio San Paolo in the last three seasons. He wrote, “I would like to thank Maurizio Sarri for his precious dedication to Calcio Napoli, which has made it possible to give prestige and emotions to the city and to the blue fans all over the world, creating a model of play admired everywhere and by anyone. Bravo Maurizio.”
Under Sarri, the team became runners-up to Juventus twice in the past three seasons. Sarri, who is already been showered with job offers, is one of the candidates being considered by Chelsea to become the successor of Chelsea. Conte’s departure now looks evident as he is receiving widespread criticism for not being able to lead the team to the Premier League and Champions League. His season ended last week with a FA Cup victory over Manchester United.
Ancelotti is widely regarded as the most successful manager of this era. He has won several trophies in Spain, Italy, France, England, and Germany. He has won the Serie A, the Premier League, Bundeslinga, igue 1 as well as three Champions Leagues. Moving forward, he will have to carry the legacy of Sarri on his shoulders and improve the team dynamics.
After getting a manager like him on the team, Napoli is now reportedly targeting Balotelli. The player has recorded 26 goals in 38 matches this season and his contract with Nice is also ending, making him a free agent. They are also trying hard to keep Jorginho on their side.
